MOVING FROM CONCEPT TO REALITY

SERVING A

wide range of users

The Government of Canada announced funding for a proposed recreational trail project with Budget 2016. The project concept arises from the Icefields Parkway Strategic Concept (2009) which was guided by a steering committee with additional representation by indigenous people and the general public. The proposed, environmentally-friendly trail is intended to meet the needs of a wide-range of users, cyclists, runners and families that may wish to leave their cars behind so they can closer connect with the landscape.

ECOLOGICAL

integrity

A detailed impact analysis and input from consultations will guide decisions on the Icefields Trail project. The Icefields Trail North Support Coalition intends to respond in detail to the proposed development impact assessment document, as well as the final project proposal to ensure the project balances the interests of ecological integrity and visitor experience.

RESPONSIBLE

stewardship

Parks Canada has openly stated it is committed to protecting ecological integrity; this will be done in a variety of ways such as: maximizing use of existing infrastructure, minimizing effects on natural/cultural resources, minimizing the number of crossings, using existing trails and portions of old road, using existing bridges, etc. Parks Canada has indicated Canadians will have an opportunity to comment on the detailed impact analysis by mid-July
